Colour Textbooks for students at the price of black and white printing

Over the last 4 years, the reprographic studio of the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague, Suchdol, has been operating with the sheet-fed inkjet press: KYOCERA TASKalfa Pro 15000c.

Thanks to this solution, students are provided with colour-printed textbooks at the price equivalent to black-and-white printing from previously-used equipment. It has become evident that the KYOCERA TASKalfa Pro 15000c production colour inkjet press is the ideal choice for this type of printed material.

Background

The reprographic studio of the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague prints internal study materials for the Faculty of Economics and Management, which is attended by approximately two-thirds of the total number of 12,000 - 15,000 students attending the University. The University runs an e-shop from which students can order textbooks. Apart from textbooks, the reprographic studio also prints project outputs, various conference-related materials, period publications, and other similar materials.

The Challenge

New equipment had been on the minds of employees of the reprographic studio for some time, but no evaluated options met their requirements for the ideal price-performance ratio.

“We had 2 laser technologies and we were printing black and white pages on a digital duplicator. We had to print the material, cut it, and collate it. It was time-consuming and we desperately needed a different solution,” explains Vladimír Najman, the studio manager, as to why they purchased the Kyocera inkjet device.

The production of colour textbooks was substantially more expensive, therefore they were not produced for economic reasons.

The Solution

A test print of samples for several typical printing jobs was conducted in the KYOCERA Document Solution showroom. The aim was to check the print quality and, above all, to calculate the cost of printing colour textbooks.

Another key requirement was the maximum reliability of the new printing solution - to ensure that all student materials were printed on time. Out of the possible options considered, the KYOCERA TASKalfa Pro 15000c inkjet press, with high-capacity paper feeder and high-capacity stacker, was eventually selected.

With its intuitive and clear graphical interface, the Fiery print server that is normally supplied with the device has also enabled ease of use.

The Impact

“The advantage of the new KYOCERA TASKalfa Pro 15000c is the elimination of several activities, as it can print and feed materials into book blocks ready for perfect binding, ”explains Vladimír Najman. He also adds: “Among the other advantages are definitely the cost benefit, environmental friendliness, and its size, which is suitable for the limited space available in our studio.”

Most of the materials are intended for students, who are naturally concerned about how much they will spend on textbooks, so the reprographic studio is aiming for maximum affordability.

In the past, textbooks and proceedings could not be printed in colour because the cost was up to four times higher. The Kyocera equipment therefore allows students to print in colour at the same price as black-and-white printing.
