Offsetting carbon emissions: A carbon neutral entity

Guided by the Kyocera philosophy of love and respect, Kyocera Document Solutions UK is taking action to offset their operations’ carbon emissions by working with partners to reforest their paper use and by funding carbon-reducing projects around the world.

The calculation of KYOCERA Group UK's operational carbon emissions includes:

  • Direct (scope 1) emissions - gas central heating and fuel for company-owned vehicles
  • Electricity-related (scope 2) emissions - a calculation of the emissions generated by their electricity consumption, based on the UK energy grid's mix of energy sources
  • Certain indirect (scope 3) emissions - Kyocera Document Solutions UK have continued to broaden the range they measure in 2023-2024, to include staff commuting to and from their homes to their designated place of work, energy and heating used by staff when working from home, upstream and downstream transportation of Kyocera goods undertaken by third-party courier/transit companies, supply and treatment of water to and from Kyocera’s UK sites and paper usage across UK group operations.

By carbon offsetting Scope 1+2 and certain Scope 3 GHG-emissions 2021/2022, they are proud to be a carbon-neutral entity.

Following an increase in scope 3 emissions reported in 2022-23, Kyocera Document Solutions UK continues to broaden the range it measures, to include:

  • Energy and heating used by staff and contractors when working from home, as part of their hybrid working policy.
  • Upstream and downstream transportation of Kyocera goods undertaken by third-party courier/transit companies, including road and air freight.
  • Emissions from purchased capital goods (related IT operations).
  • Supply and treatment of water to and from Kyocera’s UK sites.
  • Generation and transportation of electricity used at Kyocera’s UK sites.
  • Staff commuting to and from their homes to their designated place of work.
  • Other expensed fuel usage from staff and contractors (in line with SECR reporting).
  • Paper usage by Kyocera Document Solutions UK Group operations.

These are calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol and UK GHG reporting conversion factors.

However, it can be difficult within the supply chain to obtain accurate CO2 emissions readings for services provided to UK operations. This may hamper the identification of and subsequent offsetting of scope 3 emissions.

Investing in a greener tomorrow

Kyocera Document Solutions UK puts its money where its mouth is, partnering with MyClimate and PrintReleaf to make a difference.

MyClimate

MyClimate

In CY 2024, Kyocera Document Solutions UK invested in MyClimate projects in Tanzania, Nigeria and Burundi that reduced or sequestered 15,245 tonnes of CO2, protected 1,808 hectares of forest (an area 250 x the size of Buckingham Palace), provided 404 cooking stoves saving 5,494 tonnes of wood, and helped conserve local wildlife, including giraffes, African elephants, zebra, buffalo, leopards and African lions.

PrintReleaf

PrintReleaf

Since 2021, our colleagues in the UK have planted more than 24,000 trees through PrintReleaf, covering an area equivalent to 10 rugby pitches. They are also growing UK native woodland, which will sequester carbon and provide a habitat for local wildlife.

As sweet as honey!

One of our favourite initiatives taken by Kyocera Document Solutions UK is the honeybee paradise they’ve created to help these little guys thrive and flourish. Bees are vital components of nature, maintaining an essential balance of biodiversity in our world, and thanks to Kyocera, there are more of them buzzing around!

The roof of the Reading HQ is home to around 120,000 bees at the height of Summer, spanning two hives. These honeybees range about 2 miles every day to gather pollen before returning home to their Kyocera hives, named ‘Home Sweet Home’ and ‘Let it Bee’. Find out more about Kyocera Document Solutions UK’s bee hives and how they help fulfil United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
